OTTER | FISHERMAN'S FOE [t-shirt]
In reading Victorian natural history books I’ve come across the theme of the otter as the enemy of the fisherman, or more accurately, the competition; as the otter, like all of its wonderfully bloodthirsty mustelid kinsmen, is a supreme & insatiable hunter, slaying for sport & eating but the choicest cuts from its kills. In The Compleat Angler, a 1653 English treatise on the art of angling, the protagonist states, “I am a Brother of the Angle, and therefore an enemy of the otter, he does me and my friends so much mischief...” Now I haven’t done much fishing at all, so when local fishermen are telling me how much they despise the reintroduced otters in our creeks & rivers that supposedly line up for trout stocking days, I’m just thrilled to know there are lots of mustelids around. I am a great admirer of the weasel family [otters, weasels, minks, fishers, martens, wolverines] and their prowess as sleek & savage super predators.
