A large part of November & December was spent in the woods in pursuit of venison and with that came a lot of time to look around: at the blooming witch hazel, the downy woodpecker cheeping like a mouse, the red-bellied woodpecker eating wild grapes, the mohawked pileated swooping & wuk-wuk-wuking about, then landing on dead wood in search of ants to chisel out. And beyond the woods edge, in a meadow blanketed in the year’s first snow, a territorial buck finding feeding does.
