"A foraged buffet for an eastern gray." As a sequel to the Foraging Black Bear comes the Foraging Gray Squirrel. This bushy tailed lil' common critter from our backyards, city parks, and hardwood forests has an immensely varied diet ranging from nuts, buds, berries, flowers, eggs, insects, bones, bark, fungi, and seeds. With some frustrating research, field observation, and phone calls and emails to biologists and mycologists, I picked a specific example from each category: there are medicinal plants used by herbalists such as slippery elm, goldenseal, and hawthorn; the same nuts like acorns that are harvested by human foragers; and kooky animal snacks like deer antlers, tent caterpillars, and robin eggs.
